Review

Oh brave new world! The silver screen continues to bring forth new tales that leave audiences wide-eyed and breathless. And what a play we have today! The name of this film? Elephant White.

This movie directed by Prachya Pinkaew became available to the public in 2011. Its storyline takes place in Bangkok, amidst a world of crime, corruption, and violence. It’s a gritty tale that unveils the dark side of human nature through characters that are flawed and full of contradictions.

The plot unfolds as we meet an assortment of characters. We have Curtie Church (played by the dynamic Kevin Bacon), a skilled mercenary with an enigmatic past who is hired to kill a notorious organ trafficker known as “The Ghost” and put an end to his gruesome business.

As Curtie navigates his way through the labyrinthine streets of Bangkok, he encounters Mae (played by the stunning Djimon Hounsou), a beautiful woman who is caught up in The Ghost’s web and needs Curtie’s help.

Their partnership takes them on an unforgettable quest for justice that involves dangerous confrontations with guns, knives, and even elephants!

Elephant White’s cast also includes Yasuaki Kurata as Colonel Taoka, Ron Smoorenburg as Ross, Sahajak Boonthanakit as Bhunakorn, and Jirantanin Pitakporntrakul as Jong-da.

One thing we can say for sure is that Elephant White does not shy away from showing intense action sequences or explicit scenes. However, it doesn’t compromise its narrative structure either; this movie is much more than just mindless violence.

Its strong point lies in its ability to weave together interesting personalities in complex situations. Elephant White speaks to its audience about poverty, corruption and ultimately hope – all whilst being set against the backdrop of one of Asia’s most vibrant cities.

The screenplay was written by Kevin Bernhardt, who adapted the story from the novel “The Bleeding Edge” by Kent Harrington. Bernhardt takes on Harrington’s original and forges a script that captures the spirit of Bangkok’s criminal underworld with clarity and precision.

Let us not forget Elephant White’s special effects. They convey the action sequences with skill and panache. The fight choreography is spectacular and deserving of mention in any discussion of this movie.

Jiradej Kuengsongban, who worked as Elephant White’s cinematographer, deserves plaudits for his work creating some truly memorable shots. From widescreen views to intimate close-ups, Jiradej brings a fresh perspective to this gritty tale.

And let us not forget about sound editing. The use of gunfire along with ambient sounds (including an elephant’s roar) add more depth and layers to this already complex story.

Elephant White boasts an impressive score by RZA (of Wu-Tang Clan fame), which draws inspiration from traditional Asian music with its mix of classic chimes and pulsating hip-hop beats. It is a fitting soundtrack for a movie that melds modern action with ancient themes.

All in all, Elephant White delivers on all fronts. It has action, suspense, drama, great characters, strong performances, beautiful cinematography & haunting music all rolled into one captivating package.

Of course, no movie is immune to criticism. Some may argue that it leans too heavily towards violence or that some of its scenes are too graphic in nature. However one cannot deny its status as an unforgettable ride into a world where morality is tested at every step.

In conclusion: If you’re looking for something entertaining yet thought-provoking then look no further than Elephant White – it is unequivocally one film that deserves your attention and praise.
