Review

As a researcher and storyteller, I’ve often found that movies provide a perfect intersection between the two. And one movie that keeps coming back to my mind is “Lake Placid.” This 1999 film isn’t exactly a classic, but it’s worth revisiting for its blend of humor, horror, and heart.

The storyline of “Lake Placid” follows a group of people as they investigate mysterious deaths around Black Lake in Maine. The culprit? A giant crocodile who turns out to be the biggest and deadliest one in history. The plot thickens with the introduction of various characters – including an eccentric millionaire who funded the expedition to capture the creature – each wrestling with their own personal demons as well as the horrific danger at hand.

One thing that makes “Lake Placid” so memorable is its star-studded cast. Bridget Fonda portrays Kelly Scott, an uptight New York paleontologist who initially scoffs at the notion of hunting a massive crocodile in Maine until circumstances force her to reexamine her beliefs. Oliver Platt plays Hector Cyr, a rich collector who is both intelligent and witty but whose eccentricities sometimes border on madness. Meanwhile, Bill Pullman brings his dependable charm to bear as Jack Wells, a fish and game officer who has flirted with Kelly before. Rounding out the quartet is Brendan Gleeson’s Sheriff Hank Keough, whose no-nonsense demeanor belies his immense courage.

Director Steve Miner does an excellent job of balancing comedic moments with jump scares, while David E. Kelley’s script not only provides plenty of laughs but also offers unexpected depth to each character’s backstory. In fact, one of the standout scenes in “Lake Placid” involves Platt’s character giving an impassioned speech about how he always felt like an outsider due to his interest in strange and unusual things – an undercurrent that informs much of his behavior throughout the film.

Another aspect that helps “Lake Placid” stand out is its excellent score, which was composed by John Ottman. The music perfectly captures the film’s various moods, from the jangling suspense of the crocodile attack scenes to the jaunty brass of Platt’s signature theme.

The film also boasts some impressive special effects, particularly in its portrayal of the titular creature. Though it can be tough to make a giant crocodile believable onscreen, “Lake Placid” manages to pull it off with aplomb.

Despite all its strengths, “Lake Placid” did not receive much critical acclaim upon its release and never became a major box office success. Nevertheless, the film has developed a cult following over time, with many viewers appreciating its clever blend of humor and horror. And while it may not have garnered any major awards or accolades, that doesn’t diminish its standing as an entertaining and memorable movie.

Overall, “Lake Placid” is a movie that deserves more attention than it initially received. With its excellent cast, clever writing, and impressive visuals, this film is one that will continue to fascinate audiences for years to come. As Bridget Fonda’s character Kelly Scott says in one memorable line: “Sometimes life has a way of putting us where we need to be.” Watching “Lake Placid” might just be where you need to be today – especially if you’re looking for something that’s both thrilling and funny.
