In the mystical land of Siberia, there is a tale that has recently been brought to life on the silver screen. This magnificent flick is none other than the one and only, “Siberia.” This movie is a breathtaking mix of romance, drama, and suspense that kept me glued to my seat until the very end. I must say I was impressed!
The movie tells us a story about Lucas Hill (played by Keanu Reeves), who is an American diamond dealer and travels to Russia to sell some rare blue diamonds to some dubious buyers. He had hoped for a quick sell and return home but instead finds himself in a dangerous situation when one of his associates goes missing.
The plot thickens as Lucas starts investigating his associate’s disappearance. In doing so, he becomes attracted to Katya (played by Ana Ularu), who happens to be the manager of the bar where he’s staying. They fall in love and go on an explosive adventure together as Katya leads him deep into the heart of Siberia.
As they search for his associate together, they encounter various obstacles along the way. These include corrupt cops, shady businessmen, and even Russian gangsters. Together, they must fight through these obstacles while trying not to lose themselves in the Siberian wilderness.
Through it all, Reeves gives an excellent performance as Lucas Hill. He shows his acting range with portraying fear and vulnerability yet exudes confidence when necessary. Ana Ularu also brings depth to her character Katya; she’s sharp-tongued yet vulnerable when she opens up about her past.
The score for this film deserves special mention as it adds another layer of emotion throughout the film. The music complements each scene perfectly and heightens each moment’s intensity- from quiet moments in snow-covered fields to loud action sequences amidst bustling city streets.
Filming this movie was no easy feat – siberia itself proved challenging with its inhospitable terrain and freezing temperatures. Yet, the cinematography is breathtaking, capturing the raw beauty of this remote land.
When it was released in 2018, Siberia didn’t exactly receive rave reviews. Critics pointed out that Reeves’ performance and the film’s cinematography were its saving graces. Some reviewers found the plot perplexing, and others felt that its pace was too slow for an action movie.
