Review
It was a dark and stormy night when I decided to watch the Tamil blockbuster, Asuran. Little did I know that the movie would take me on an emotional rollercoaster ride through the murky depths of humanity.
The movie, based on Poomani’s novel Vekkai, is set in rural Tamil Nadu in the 1980s. It tells the story of Sivasamy (Dhanush), a farmer who is forced to become violent to protect his family from the tyranny of the upper-caste landlord’s son, Kumaran (Teejay Arunasalam).
The movie is directed by Vetrimaaran, who has also co-written the screenplay with Manimaran. The two have taken a bold step in adapting the book for the screen, and they have done it with great finesse. They have managed to capture every nuance and detail of Poomani’s work and have brought it to life on celluloid.
Dhanush, in particular, delivers a power-packed performance as Sivasamy. He embodies the character with such conviction that you can’t help but sympathize with him. His portrayal of a man pushed to his limits by circumstances beyond his control is nothing short of brilliant.
