The summer of 1988 was one that would not soon be forgotten. A group of high school friends – Abby, Gretchen, Margaret, and Glee – were inseparable. However, their lives were about to change drastically after a nightmarish encounter with the supernatural.
The film “My Best Friend’s Exorcism,” directed by Damon Thomas and written by Jenna Lamia, is a horror-comedy that takes place in the late 80s. Set in Charleston, South Carolina, it tells the story of two best friends: Abby, played by Sydney Sweeney and Gretchen (Madison Iseman). The two girls have been friends since they were young and share everything with each other.
But one night after taking LSD at a party at an abandoned plantation house, Gretchen’s behavior starts to change in strange and alarming ways. Soon enough Abby realizes that her best friend has been possessed by a demon. As Abby desperately tries to save her friend from this demonic entity, she discovers that there may be more people involved in the plot than she previously thought.
The storyline of “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” is an intriguing blend of horror and comedy that keeps you on edge yet makes you laugh out loud at the same time. The film was based on a novel of the same name by Grady Hendrix published in 2016.
The young cast does an excellent job portraying their teenage characters during this era. There are lots of great lines all throughout the film as well – one memorable quote is when Abby says “Don’t you know? Possession is nine-tenths of the law.”
The film also features outstanding cinematography which provides some comical moments. One memorable scene involves Gretchen’s twisted body floating above her bed while vomiting green slime.
One aspect setting this movie apart from other possession films is its unique soundtrack featuring songs like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler which adds a fresh, quirky vibe to the story.
