Review

In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell famously espoused the idea that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in any given field. But what if we applied this idea to empathy and understanding? What if we put in the hours to truly understand the experiences of those who are different from us? This is the message at the heart of The Hate U Give, a powerful and timely film adaptation of Angie Thomas’ novel.

The movie centers around Starr Carter (played brilliantly by Amandla Stenberg), a black teenager who straddles two worlds: her predominantly black neighborhood and the mostly white prep school she attends. When she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood friend Khalil at the hands of a white police officer, Starr is forced to confront difficult questions about race, injustice, and her own identity.

The storyline is nothing new – we’ve seen countless films about police brutality and racial tension in America. But what sets The Hate U Give apart is its nuanced portrayal of complex characters. From Starr’s supportive but flawed father Maverick (played by Russell Hornsby) to her white boyfriend Chris (K.J. Apa), each character feels like a fully fleshed-out individual rather than a caricature or stereotype.

Director George Tillman Jr. smartly avoids heavy-handedness or didacticism, allowing moments of humor and warmth to shine through amidst the heartbreak and anger. The film deftly juggles multiple themes – family dynamics, code-switching, PTSD – without ever losing sight of its central message about the value of Black lives.

One standout scene features Starr giving a speech at a rally after Khalil’s death. “It’s not enough to not be racist,” she insists. “We have to be anti-racist.” It’s a call for action that resonates far beyond the fictional world of Garden Heights.

The cast is uniformly excellent, with Stenberg anchoring the film with a raw and powerful performance. Hornsby and Regina Hall (who plays Starr’s mother Lisa) bring depth to their roles, and Common has a memorable turn as Maverick’s former gang associate-turned-activist.

The film’s score incorporates hip-hop and R&B tracks that complement the story’s themes – Tupac Shakur’s “Thug Life” mantra is a recurring motif. The cinematography is evocative, capturing both the beauty and grit of Garden Heights.

The Hate U Give has been widely praised for its portrayal of Blackness and its unflinching look at police violence. But it has also faced criticism from some who feel that it portrays law enforcement too negatively or doesn’t do enough to address intra-community violence.

These debates are important, but they shouldn’t overshadow the film’s impact. In an era where Black lives are still disproportionately affected by violence and systemic oppression, The Hate U Give is a necessary reminder of the power of art to inspire empathy and understanding.

As Gladwell wrote in Blink, “We have, as human beings, a storytelling problem…We’re a bit too quick to come up with explanations for things we don’t really have an explanation for.” The Hate U Give challenges us to examine our own storytelling – to listen to voices that we may not have heard before, and to put in the hours necessary to understand them.
