If you suffer from acrophobia, “The Walk” may just be the scariest movie you’ll ever watch. But it’s also one of the most thrilling, heart-warming and visually stunning films of the year.
Based on a true story, “The Walk” tells the tale of Philippe Petit, a French high-wire artist who walked a tightrope between New York’s Twin Towers in 1974. This feat is still considered one of the greatest art performance stunts in history.
The film begins with Petit (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) preparing for his walk in Paris, where he first hones his skills on tightropes strung between buildings. The first twenty minutes or so are a bit slow, but necessary to set up the complex and exciting heist that brings him to New York City.
Petit is aided by an eclectic crew of accomplices, including his girlfriend Annie (Charlotte Le Bon), whom he meets in Manhattan. Once there, they begin scouting out locations near the Twin Towers for Petit’s wire walk.
The film uses flashbacks as a storytelling device and intercuts shots of the World Trade Centre being built as Petit trains and develops his plan. Director Robert Zemeckis skillfully captures the Manhattan skyline and recreates the towers in stunning detail using both practical sets and visual effects.
When it comes time for Petit to make his wire walk, we’re treated to breathtaking views from atop one of the towers.
